Butter Boards

What is a butter board? The are the new trendy alternative to a charcuturie board and have taken the entertaining world by storm. They are a rich, creamy and customizable way to impress your guests.

What is a Butter Board

It is exactly what it sounds like; a beautifully spread layer of butter on a serving board, topped with an array of flavorful ingredients. Guests scoop up the butter with bread, or crackers and it is a delicious communal dining experience.

Social Media has made the butter board popular as food lovers have shared their creative takes on this simple idea. They’re easy to make – No cooking required! Just spread, sprinkle and serve. They are highly customizable – sweet, savory or spicy. Use up items in your pantry and fridge to make the possibilities endless. Visually Stunning – with the right toppings and if you want some artistic spreading, they are edible works of art. Butter boards are ideal for a crowd and perfect for sharing.

How to Make Butter Board

1-2-3 and you’ll be done.

CHOOSE YOUR BUTTER

Start with a high-quality butter; I believe this is where it is worth spending the money on organic or even a FRENCH butter; yes it is different; yes it is better. IF YOU WANT TO ADD A FLAVOURD OR PRETTY MALDON SALT – USE UNSALTED BUTTER. Let your butter soften to room temperature for easy spreading. You can just spread the butter as is or you can get fancy and turn it into a flavoured or compound butter; think garlic-herb, honey butter, truffle butter or citrus butter.

PICK YOUR TOPPINGS

This is where you can be creative and mix together your favorite flavors. Here are a few suggestions

Flaky Salt and Cracked Pepper

Fresh Herbs- thyme, rosemary or chives

Roasted Garlic and Caramelized Onions – roasting the garlic brings out sweetness

Grated Parmesan – nutty and salty kick

Chili Flakes and Honey

Sugar and Cinnamon – perfect for a brunch with pastries

Fresh Berries – raspberries, blueberries and figs will add color

Crushed nuts – for crunch

SERVER WITH DIPPERS

Serve an assortment of bread and crackers, warm baguette slices, sourdough or ciabatta. You can go crunchy with some pita chips.

TIPS

Use a wooden board – easy to spread the butter on and adds the rustic charm that goes with this dish.

Keep It Fresh – Add the delicate ingredients like herbs just before serving.

Provide lots of spreaders – NO Double Dipping Please

Must be served at room temperature – the entire effect will be ruined if you can’t spread your butter.

Leftovers – scrape them up and set them in the fridge. If they are savoury you can out them over grilled steak or steamed vegetables.

Serve with Green Bread – You can often special order green bread from you local grocery store if you aren’t’ up for making your own. We served our with a green sourdough but a rustic Irish soda bread would be beautiful and fairly easy.

      Notes

Festive shareable appetizer that is great with Irish stew but also celebrates the rich dairy traditions of Ireland.  Nothing goes better with a cozy stew than a thick slice of bread and butter.  This is a beautiful centerpiece and an interactive snack.
