Style The Scene

Let’s get our candle stations set up and create some ambiance. We want a mix between a DIY studio and a spa night in.

  1. Choose a large space or table and cover with kraft paper or a tablecloth that cleans easily. Set up your Guests spots around the table.
  2. At each spot
    • a place card with your guest’s name (could do a wax seal or scent it)
    • 1 heat-safe pouring container
    • 1 wick and sticker
    • a stirring stick
    • a “recipe” card to write down their scent
  3. In the middle of the table:
    • essential oils
    • wax dye options
    • bottle of shimmer or glitter
    • measuring spoons for fragrance
    • paper towels and wipes

Scent Bar

You can simply set the oils on a tray in the middle of the table or you can designate a spot and decorate it up.

Consider making a poster with some recipe suggestions

  • Lavender + Chamomile = for stress relief
  • Peppermint + Eucalyptus = for focus and energy
  • Sweet orange + Vanilla = for warmth and joy
  • Rose + Geranium = for a romance
  • Cedarwood + Sage = for grounding

Or Make a poster with Mood Suggestions

  • Calming: lavender, chamomile, bergamot
  • Energizing: citrus, mint, eucalyptus
  • Romantic: rose, ylang ylang, sandalwood

Finishing Touches – Activities and Entertainment

Photo Op

Consider a little corner with a sign that says “Smells Like Friendship” or “Light My Way”. Even if you don’t want a photo zone be sure to take lots of photos. Your friendship is worthy of being remembered.

Instructions

  1. Prep Your Container
    • Make sure your container is clean and dry.
    • Stick you wick to the bottom center using a wick sticker or a dab of hot glue
    • Use a wick holder or balance a clothespin across the top to keep the wick centered or purchase stick wicks that stand on their own.
  2. Measure and Melt the Wax
    • Fill your container with wax flakes, then double that amount (wax shrinks when melted)
    • Melt the wax in a pouring pitcher using a double boiler OR in the microwave (1-minutes bursts, stirring in between) until fully melted.
  3. Add Colour (Optional)
    • Once melted, add a small amount of candle dye. Stir until fully dissolved.
    • Tip: Start light – you can always add more.
  4. Add Scent
    • Let the wax cool for 1-2 minutes so it’s not too hot (ideal temp:130-140 F)
    • Add 20-30 drops of essential oil per candle (or about 1-1.5 tsp). Stir gently for 30 seconds.
  5. Pour the Wax
    • Slowly pour the scented wax into your container, leaving about 1/2 inch of space at the top.
    • Make sure the wick stays centered!
  6. Let It Set
    • Let the candle cool undisturbed for 1-2 hours until solid
    • Trim the wick to about 1/4 inch before burning.
Bonus – Adding Hearts or Other Molds and Shimmer to Your Candle
  1. Pour your hearts/molds first so they have time to set up
    • For Immersed Hearts/molds: Gently press your heart shaped wax melt into the soft wax so its partially submerged, creating a layered in look.
    • For Decorative Tops: Wait until the candle is just about fully set and cooled, then slightly press or place the wax heart on top. It will rest on the surface for a fun 3D effect.
    • For a Shimmer Effect: Sprinkle a bit of shimmer dust or even crushed dried petals around the top of your candle for extra flair.

Sips and Bites

Watering and feeding your guests can often be the most intimidating part of hosting. A potluck helps with this and when you add a theme your guests often feel less pressure on deciding what to bring. We did a cookie potluck. If you want something savoury and simple; a Potato Chip potluck is also easy and fun.

Dirty Soda Bar

Dirty Soda Bar

These are really popular and people love them.

Set up a fun and fizzy station with

  • Sodas: Cola, Diet Cola, Dr, Pepper, root beer and sparkling waters
  • Creamers: vanilla, coconut, caramel, hazelnut
  • Fruit Slices: lime, lemon, orange, cherries
  • Flavoured syrups: coconut, raspberry, peach, cherry
  • Alcohol(optional): vodka, coconut rum, whiskey
  • Crushed ice

Potluck Bar

Choose a fun easy potluck. Here are a few ideas that will allow your guests the option to just swing by the grocery store or do some baking.

  • Mini Cookies
  • Sundae – everyone can bring a topping, or a different type of ice cream
  • Potato Chips – just grab a bag of chips on your way over
  • Popcorn – Any flavoured popcorn

Tips and Tricks

Candle making is simple but here’s a few tips to make your candles high end.

Make Sure:

Your wick is secure before pouring and that your wick is centered while cooling. Use a clothespin or chopsticks to help.

Let the wax cool slightly before adding fragrance – this preserves the fragrance

Avoid moving the candles while they set – this will give you a smooth, glossy finish.

This party is about creativity, community and you get to leave with a little something that smells as good as the memories you made.
