Chillin with my “SOUP”er Friends: Soup Soiree
Winter in Canada is long, dark and often relentless. It’s the perfect excuse to gather your village, snuggle up and create warm with a Soup Soiree. There’s something about a steaming bowl of soup, flickering candlelight and laughter that makes the cold feel a little less daunting.
It’s simple, affordable, and full of heart – exactly what we need to get through those chilly nights ahead.
Must Haves – The Party Essentials
Let’s build an evening built around comfort, conversation, and steaming bowls of homemade goodness.
A Call to Celebrate: Invitations
Send a casual invitation or text that feels lets your guests know the evening is going to feel cozy.
“Join us for a Soupe Soiree! Bring a pot of comfort and your coziest sweater. Let’s gather to share some recipes, swap some good conversation, and survive the upcoming winter together. One spoonful at a time.”
Tell your friends to come in stretchy pants and warm sweaters. Comfort is the theme.
Style the Scene – Decor and Ambiance
Given that each guest shows up with a pot of soup the moment the lids came off, the room was filled the scent of simmering herbs, caramelized onion or roasted vegetables. That alone instantly created an atmosphere of warmth and connection.
Colors
We wanted something elegant and trendy so we skipped the obvious reds and oranges and chose shades of browns and creams with natural textures.
Table
The decor embraced rustic charm and winter warmth:
- Plaid blankets served as tablecloths. They’re affordable, fuzzy and perfect for the theme.
- Wooden boards were our platters. They are natural and homey.
- Brown vases with dried flowers, pinecones, and flickering candles for an inviting glow.
- A crackling fire in the background, setting a traditional setting.
- The center of the table? A grazing style spread of breads, mini grilled cheeses, soup toppings and a touch of charcuterie.
Foundation of Flavours: Sips and Bites
Always the most important part of a party and especially when the party revolves around soup.
Sips
Mocktail: Soiree Spritzer – A bright mix of ginger syrup, cranberry juice and orange juice topped with sparkling water or a splash of ginger beer for a spicier kick. Garnish with an orange slice and a few frozen cranberries.
Cocktail: Spiced Orange Cranberry Margarita – Shake together tequila, orange liqueur, cranberry juice and a cinnamon-sugar rim. A winter twist on a summer classic.
Bites
Roasted Tomato Soup – This was our contribution to the potluck soup soiree. It’s rich, velvety and easy to make.
Soup Topping Ideas – Consider all of these or just a couple. They are great additions to your soup but also add interest to your table.
- Shredded cheese (aged cheddar, parmesan, or gruyere)
- Herbed croutons or crispy chickpeas
- Fresh herbs like thyme, basil, or parsley
- Chili or truffle oil
- Bacon bits, caramelized onions or green onion curls
- Sour cream, creme fraiche, or Greek yogurt dollops
Bread Baskets – If you can serve some of them warm it makes it even more comforting and special.
- Garlic baguette slices
- Buttery dinner rolls
- Mini grilled cheese sandwiches
Sweet Endings – The best part of eating soup for dinner is that you normally still have room for yummy dessert.
- Warm Apple Crumble
- Platter of Homemade Chocolate Chip Cookies
